Much ado about nothing – New Year’s Resolutions

New Years always start with a bunch of resolutions. Probably one of the most common resolutions is to lose weight and eat healthier. After all, you are what you eat, right? This post is about my strengths and weaknesses when it comes to food.

My go-to healthy snack is BERRIES! I love berries, any kind of berries, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries (sounds berrylicious, doesn’t it?). Today I went to the store after work to pick us some beef for the meatballs Dmitry is cooking tonight (I can smell them at my desk right now and they smell delicious!) and passing by raspberries, I could not resist. I’ve met a few people who are not really berry fans or who are very specific about the berries they eat. I honestly don’t understand how that can be possible. Maybe it has something to do with where and when I grew up. In my childhood in Ukraine we grew much of our own produce and we only ate what was in season, so when the summer came, it was a feast for all! We didn’t have berries all year round available to us and when the first crop of any berry hit the market, it was incredibly expensive. Things have changed since the super markets have taken over and made almost any fruit available all year round. At first it may sound like a great thing, but when you think about what an off-season berry has to go through to get to the store, you start questioning availability versus quality. In any case, I love berries and am always happy to snack on some. 🙂

And now to the weakness. My food weakness is BAKERY! It might partially be due to the fact that my grandmother was a retired baker. Any time I visited (since my grandparents lived in another city, I would spend summers with them) my grandma was always in the kitchen cooking, baking, and cursing at her old stove that just wouldn’t cooperate. Honestly, this is the only time I ever heard my grandmother curse – at her stove. 🙂 Of course, store bakeries don’t compare, I actually am not a big fan of “cakey” foods like cupcakes, I like the heavier dough, the kind in kolaches or the bread. So yeah, these muffins from HEB and Central Market with real blueberries and strawberries are my weakness. I can also eat bread with nothing, just bread as a meal. 🙂

So these are my strengths and weaknesses when it comes to food. I think it’s important to balance things out by looking at the good and the bad, instead of just the bad. So what are your food weaknesses and strengths? Are they part of your New Year’s resolutions?

I love berries, too. My dad had (and still has) a big garden while I was growing up. We had berries and every kind of fruit available to us in our own backyard. Many of the fruit were exotic. Have you every heard of an etrog? Or a Japanese cherry?

As far as strengths, I am a salad lover and crave a good salad every day. So I get more than my share of greens and other crunchy veggies.

Weaknesses? I love desserts. I can't go a day without desserts.

Are the cherries sour? We had 3 sour cherry trees, but I am not sure if they were Japanese.
I had to google etrog. I've seen it in stores before, what does it taste like?

Yumm. Love berries too — especially self picked! And baked goods. Guess we can always go for dessert together :D
Made no resolutions — too lazy :-/

I know, I'm kind of lazy this year too :P. No real resolutions. But I do want to study for GRE.
