Labor Day Long Weekend of Organization

So this post is a bit embarrassing to write. I consider myself a pretty organized person, but I am also a bit… lazy. I know, weird combination, but trust me, the struggle is real. So I try to organize my closet from time to time, but I’ve really let it go to sh… shish kabob lately. And once my clothing rack made a beautiful smiley face in a shape of a U I completely gave up on being neat.

Shoes everywhere… pants, shorts, hangers. I mean… it’s not pretty.

So after watching a few youtube videos for inspiration I got to work and pulled everything (!!!) out of my closet.

One by one I started going through every piece of clothing and shoe I owned. With this mountain of clothes I am still amazed how I thought I had nothing to wear. But the thing is, if you keep holding on to stuff that you would not wear today, and probably not tomorrow, it just clutters your closet and hides the stuff you would actually wear. So purging had begun and a pile of donation clothes was born! I was even holding on to my prom dresses from high school which I would definitely not ever wear again! Why keep them? Memories? Who cares!? I have some pix somewhere on my drive for memories. 🙂

I used these amazing boxes from Ikea to help me organize shoes (they only had 7 and I bought them all).

Ok, it’s not perfect, but it’s a start! I know that organizing clothes by color makes them look neater, but I like to organize my clothes based on the sleeve length. So far it’s been working, otherwise I am afraid all the Ts and Tanks will get lost between the long sleeved shirts.

We also took out this annoying shoe rack thing that we never used, and put up this picture I’ve had for a while. It immediately fancied the closet. 🙂

But wait! I am not done! I’ve also tackled the linen closet! I can honestly say my linens never looked so neat before.

So here are three tips to get you started:

  1. Pull EVERYTHING out!
  2. PURGE!
    • donate
    • sell
    • trash
    • keep
  3. Put everything back (neatly)
    • use appropriate storage containers
