Houston Rodeo BBQ Cook-off

I may not be a native Texan, but Texas culture and soul are impossible to avoid! One of the most Texan things anyone can do is to go to the rodeo.

Besides the rodeo itself, the Houston Rodeo provides an affordable opportunity to see your favorite performers with its’ famous concert series. This way we’ve been able to see Pitbull, Maroon 5, Kid Rock, Enrique Iglesias, Bruno Mars (my favorite) and ZZ Top for only $25 a ticket! It helps to know someone who may be a season ticket holder :).

But Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) also holds the biggest pre-party in the city with a three day BBQ cook-off. I’ve always wanted to go, but thought that you had to be invited by a specific tent. There are over 250 tents participating in the cook-off! This year we got invitations to two tents!

Turns out you don’t need a private invitation to attend the carnival (just have to pay the admission), and there is a public tent providing free BBQ. Yep, FREE BBQ! And this is the best time to go to the carnival if all you want to do is play games and ride the rides as the lines are short.

The prizes at the carnival can be ridiculous. Have you ever won anything this big?

And if you’re going to the rodeo, to avoid traffic jam and paying for parking, we recommend parking somewhere downtown or near the medical center and catching the train. Just be prepared to squeeze in.
