Discomfiture… not a word you hear very often, but the new console table I got is making me feel exactly that – defeat!
Long story short, we decided to get rid of the Ikea 4×4 KALLAX shelving unit that we currently have positioned on the wall at the end of the dining table, and just go with a small console on the wall between the stairs and the kitchen. (I might repurpose the KALLAX in the guest bedroom/office, not sure yet).
I found this perfect console table at Target (online), it was on sale for 20% off, after another $5 off coupon, tax and free shipping it came to about $125. I read lots of reviews that said that assembling it was a pain in the.. well, you know, but I didn’t believe them. I consider myself a furniture assembly pro, so I challenged myself to complete the assembly under an hour. Um.. didn’t happen, it took me about an hour and a half (does watching Friends count as assembly time?). I was extra cautious making sure that I don’t install any pieces backwards. On the positive side, it arrived without any damages and only one hole didn’t line up, which I had to drill out a bit. The assembled piece looks great and feels sturdy, although, it is a cheap table, but not worse than Ikea :). I love that it has a drawer (what looks like two drawers), where I can dump my mail, coupons, sunglasses, and work badge and no one has to look at it. I also upgraded the knobs from basic small ones that came with the console to ceramic ones I found at Home Goods.
Anyways, we have a console, that’s great, but a new challenge for me is to decorate it. And since we are not going to use the KALLAX shelf, there is an added challenge to store a few ugly necessities (like batteries, place card holders, extra candles, etc.) out of sight but in close reach.
My original idea was to make a chalkboard to hang above the table, functionally it would be perfect, because it can be customized for any occasion (the message), but esthetically I am not sure. The console is already a little bit darker than what I originally had in mind, and that whole area of the room is a bit on the darker side, so now I am contemplating adding a mirror.
I played with a few things online, let me know what you think. Sorry for the bad crop/paste job, tried to do a few quick renderings just to get an idea.
Random shaped mirrors. (I would diy them using Ikea Overlays so they would look a little different).
I also considered putting a small wine storage shelf on the bottom, but that didn’t really work.
So please, please, please help! I need your suggestions! What do you think? Help me decorate this annoying little space! 🙂
